the itsy bitsy spider
my grandmother has all these videos of me from when i was a little one, being the first grandchild on my mothers side, i was the new toy in town. needless to say the videos are crazy to sit and watch. and this is where i saw my earliest encounter with all things beauty. as the camera switches to from me and my family at the zoo, the screen is graced with little me, covered in my mothers cream. and by covered i mean covered. and apparently whilst being covered in this cream, it was an essential to sing the itsy bitsy spider. (obviously). so after watching that i kind of realised i had been obsessed with it my whole life.
my earliest memory of becoming obsessed with beauty and make-up was maybe 5 or 6, i would take myself upstairs, sit in front of my mothers dressing table and get out all of her make-up. i would practice different looks on myself, and then pretend i was hosting a tv show, where i would teach people to do their make-up the same way.
hercules
this may seem like a typical young girl thing to do, but i mean i was doing this everyday! majorly obsessed. i started getting my mums old beauty books and i would study them all night. then came the 'sabrina' magazines, where every week there was a collectable beauty piece free with it. needless to say i collected every single one. i needed someone to practice my make-up on, besides myself. and with a younger brother, i had no hope in him letting me use him as my model. though there came one day, when my best friend was round (we are still best friends to this day) and my brother asked us if we would make him look like hercules. naturally i went to my mums room and out came the 16 palette eyeshadows.
every christmas i would ask for something new that i could use on my face, try it out, from facial steamers, to blackhead removers. you name it. i wanted it.
mum, my nose is grey!
as i went through high school, this is where i started to become a little bit more obsessed with skincare, every advert that would come on, advertising something, i needed it. it would drive my mum insane. i was beyond obsessed with getting rid of blackheads. from the age of 3 i had been dancing with an academy, we would have a show every other year and it was seriously a lot of fun. at the age of 12, i decided to hang up my dancing shoes and call it a day. as i was in one of the higher grades, this show week meant we would be participating in all 8 of the shows. i decided that one day i would maybe give my face an exfoliation....using exfoliating gloves....on dry skin.
i sat for maybe 10 minutes, gently scrubbing at my nose, when it started to feel quite sore, i thought, only natural been at this for a while...but when i removed my hand from my nose, i noticed a small line, down the centre of my nose was bright red and i could see red veins. this surely isn't what was meant to happen...but it had. i had foolishly scrubbed away too much that i had burned my skin. panic station came in when i realised in less than 8 hours, i was going to be performing on stage...make-up... i need make-up to cover this up. and thats what i did. however the make-up turned the burn a grey, silver colour. i was just mortified. i had just gone way too far this time. i rang my mum crying explaining what had happened...she said 'sara I'm sure it isn't that bad..' i was like 'mum! my nose is grey!'
beauty school
nevertheless, the show must go on. but this didn't stop me. i don't think i will ever learn. i just love it all so much. but as I've grown up I've learnt the best ways to do these, without burning my skin. so don't worry my tips won't leave you with grey coloured skin.
when it came to a-levels, i was literally stumped on what to take, and then, like some miracle, they bought into the 6th form, beauty therapy sciences. naturally i took this subject. it was here i learnt how the skin works, and began to understand my skin a lot more. i learnt the best things here and they have continued to stay with me. i have taught myself to not be so rough with my skin, face especially. so with that, this is why i wanted to share with you my favourite tips ive learnt...they won't harm the skin..i promise. :)
